The Wells Center for Pediatric Research Summer Student Internship Program is entering its third full year of operation. It has been highly successful and has earned praise from the participating students and others around campus, including the faculty who have served as judges; Drs. Crabb, Vasko, Bosron, and Harris who are Chairs of Medicine and Biochemistry (Crabb and Harris), Associate Dean of Graduate School (Bosron) and Professor of Pharmacology and Chair candidate (Vasko). The program is listed at the top of the list on a web site developed by the IU School of Medicine as potential internship programs (see attached). The applicant pool has increased from 47 in the first year to 82 this year. We have implemented a tracking program to determine the success of our participants. We feel this is a great program, not only for the students and faculty, but also for the RMA, Dept of Pediatrics and the Wells Center for PR and our attempt to participate in stopping the "brain drain" from Indiana. Support from the RMA is crucial for the success of this program.

The Summer research internship program, which now will host its third full year of students in 2002, has become highly competitive as evidenced by the following:

In 2000, participating students came from mainly Indiana schools (Indiana University-Bloomington, Purdue, Ball State University, Anderson University, Taylor University, Butler, DePauw), and some outside of Indiana (Ohio Wesleyan University, Georgetown University, William & Mary, Vanderbilt), and even one student from Bilkent University in Turkey.

In 2001, participating students came from mainly Indiana schools (IUPUI, DePauw, Indiana University-Bloomington, University of Indianapolis, Taylor University, Purdue, St. Joseph's), and some outside of Indiana (Siena College in New York).

In 2001, Poster session yielded 4 top winners (instead of the planned 3), due to the excellence of the presentations.

For 2002, participating students are coming from across the US, from Stanford University to Boston University, and in between --- University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, University of Indianapolis, DePauw University and Case Western.

In 2002, 11 students declined their acceptance, mainly due to being accepted into other programs, such as an Internship at the National Institutes of Aging, Internship at MIT and being accepted to Graduate School. The student accepted to Graduate School was a 2001 participant in the program in the Skalnik lab (Jill Sergesketter from University of Indianapolis). Feng Tu, a 2001 participant (who at the time was a Sophomore in High School), will be doing an internship at MIT this summer.

2002 has 4 returning students who participated in 2001.
